SKYLINE INSTITUTE OF MARTIAL ARTS
A Brief History The first Northern Taekwon Do started in Hazelton, BC in 1989. Mr. Barker started
training a few friends in his back yard on Sunday afternoons. The amount of students grew quickly
and he moved his dojang (training hall) to a small school. The demand for instruction was so
great that within 18 months, a second school in Smithers was opened. These two schools grew to
180 plus members in the first three years. In 1995 a new school was founded in Houston, BC. and
shortly after Fort St. James and Burn's Lake joined the NTKD family In 1999, Mr. Barker moved to the
Okanagan and started the Northern Taekwon Do Academy (NTKD) in Kelowna, BC.
After a few years of renting training space, NTKD opened it's own full time dojang in September 2003.
This has served as the headquarters for NTKD and all of the affiliated schools. In 2009 Mr. Amos
became the head instructor and oversaw the move to the new facility on Leon Ave.
